Wharepapa South strip is located a mile east of Wharepapa South township, which is around 10 miles north west of Tokoroa. It is is a grass strip of 587m with vectors 07/25. It is privately owned so a call to the operator is recommended before flying in. The strip is easily located, being right next to the road. The plate shows it as having no slope, but the reality is a slight V shape which means you always have a downhill landing and an uphill rollout! There is a crosswind runway which is only available for top dressing. The strip is relatively straightforward for landing other than a displaced threshold on 07 due to proximity of the road.
There is a lot of rockclimbing activity around Wharepapa South and some interesting walks in the area. The excellent Wharepapa South rockclimbing cafe is located about 10-15 minutes walk from the airfield. Heading out of the airfield, turn right onto the road and keep walking, following the main road. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
